One thing we watched recently was an absolutely fascinating documentary from 1993 about Roy Lichtenstein in which Dave Gibbons posits that the man was a fraud and an art thief.Yeah, that shocked me when I first heard it but bear with Dave and by the end you’ll be agreeing.

You see, before his comics themed comics “masterpieces” Roy was more than a bit shit. And those comic panels he blew up?They were taken from old comics whose artists he didn’t even credit. For shame.

The doc is currently unavailable on the iPlayer but I’d keep a look out in case it comes back.Great stuff.

No huge secret I don’t really like Peter Gross.Where as I love Mike Carey his co-creator on Lucifer and The Unwritten and I love both books,I can think of a dozen artists I rather have than him drawing them, sorry.I believe he belongs to a group of artists who defined the way Vertigo looked in the late 90’s early 2000’s and he just hasn’t grown……Compare him to stablemate Peter Snejbjerg, who has grown so much as an artist and you’ll see what I mean.
Anyhooo…I took a quick glance at his site to find something I like and came up with this, pretty good,I do actually really like this picture but then I do love Lucifer!!

Here’s Nathan Fairbairn’s version of Officer “Shock-Headed” Pete Cheney from the much missed future-science-cop-team of Top Ten.If you aren’t familiar with Top Ten,or any of Alan Moore’s America’s Best Comics what in gods you really should be.Don’t be put off by the magnitude of weighing through an Alan Moore comic because if ABC proved anything,it’s that the great man is a whole load of fun.His ability to draw to him the best and brightest of highly recognisable or fresh names from the comics medium is astounding and Top Ten is a book which proves that;it’s offshoot mini series Smax is a delight. You should own these books. Now!

So yes,I feel like this too.Top,some very fitting Inks to Hellblazer #213 by Tim Bradstreet,& bottom just a bit of melancholy from Simon Bisley.I have put together some of the best covers & what-not from throughout the years,go check it out, although I’m sure I’ll be posting much more Hellblazer related stuff here over the next few day’s.

I don’t care much what DC’s rational is,all I know is that Hellblazer is the only title I consistently buy & have bought for so,so many years.I read Hellblazer when I’m down,it’s my happy place.

So,cheers for that DC.

Thank You DC!My Only Comics Snob Rant Ever

Rob Liefield has spent the day on twitter trying to garner sympathy from his fans….he’s leaving DC you see..

And I for one could not be happier.I hate comics snobs, never want to be one..but you know, there’s this:Totally ruined one of my most beloved characters,I won’t even begin with the awful art & lack of proportional anatomy.

If you look at all the tweets on Robs feed they are all re-tweets from fans.No re-tweets from the rest of us holding street parties.

Fourth time??Want publicity much?

Anyway,no more this then,Please bring back Grifter though, just not with Rob Liefield at the helm.I hope the other great creators stay on with the titles because they deserve better than to be canned at the whim of an ego maniac.

Yesterday on the shared site I reviewed a series by Septagon Studios(they have a tumblr too!)called Archeologists of Shadows.

You really should take a look at this book,it’s a great lesson in short chapter story telling that would belong at home in any Sci-fi/fantasy anthology comic.

A labour of love by Patricio Clarey & Lara Fuentes,Archeologists of Shadows is a stunning title. It’s photo manipulative 3d style art re-defines the word fantasy in relation to comics. You should check out Patricio Clarey’s deviantArt page for more great examples of his work on the comic.

It’s not just amazing art that makes Archeologists of Shadows a great independent buy,the story is very engaging too.We join Baltimo & Alix, two “files” in an bureaucratic nightmare world that enforces mechanization. The couple wish to remain (relatively)human & it’s this longing that drives the story.According to the titular, shadowy Archeologists, the pair may also be the “alter-egos”of the gods mentioned in the “book of references”,but is this true & how does it help them?

For more info & a preview of the story,go to Archeologists of Shadows website or go read my review thing.

If you fancy buying it go to Graphicaly,iBooks or Google play for Androids,(because robots need to buy comics too).A full list of retail & buying options is also at the official site.

Also released by Vertigo today is a genre of comic I know nothing about:Cuisine.More specifically this original Graphic novel Get Jiro, appears to be a take on the enormously popular Japanese Cookery Manga like Oishinbo.I honestly have no clue….Get jiro seems visually great though.
Don’t miss this original graphic novel from Anthony Bourdain, renowned chef, New York Times bestselling author (Kitchen Confidential, Medium Raw) and star of the Emmy-winning hit travel show No Reservations and the brand new series The Layover! Co-written with Joel Rose (LA PACIFICA, Kill Kill Faster Faster) this stylized send-up of food culture and society features spectacular detailed and dynamic art by Langdon Foss.In a not-too-distant future of food obsessed L.A., where master chefs rule the town like crime lords and people literally kill for a seat at the best restaurant, Jiro, a renegade and ruthless sushi chef arrives in town with strong ideas of his own. It’s a bloody culinary war of epic proportions, and in the end, no chef may be left alive!

A bit of a movie tie-in now….well an appearance by the Lizard in Amazing Spider-Man #688.
